OMS Analytics Dashboard

Cartegraph’s Operations Management System (OMS) helps local governments manage assets, assign work, and track resources. The UX team was tasked with creating the next big customer-facing feature. In the end, this feature would be known as the Analytics Dashboard.

We made the effort to reach out and get in front of our customers. We wanted to learn about their troubles, their delights, what they absolutely needed in a solution, and what would create a negative impact.

With a small, busy team of two, we devised a plan to connect with our users. We made a goal to reach a minimum of 10 clients per week for 3 months, with a goal creating a focus group of at least 30 clients.

Surveys

We surveyed our focus group to learn as much as we could in a short timeframe. We gained feedback about the user experience, delights, and frustrations.

User Interviews

While the answers to our online survey poured in, my colleague and I set out on the road. We chose 3 clients within the focus group, all with very different demographics (new vs long time clients, advocates vs detractors, and so on), and flew out to meet with their local government teams.

Data is king

From our research, one thing was clear – data is king. Clients were clear in their need to show metrics proving the value of Cartegraph OMS. The problem, though, is each local government runs their organization in vastly different ways. After much discussion between clients, the UX team, and the develop team, we defined our vision.

Data, the way you need it.

In simple terms, the path forward was to design a dashboard to show our clients the metrics they needed. The more in depth description? Build a completely customizable dashboard – a place where client administrators can build their perfect world of charts, KPIs, customize size and color, and show different charts to specific user types.

The dashboard itself is fairly straightforward. It’s been done before – no reason to reinvent the wheel. The focus needed to be on the creation of charts. Creating an easy and understandable creation process that worked for each client’s needs.

Introductory Video

As a Cartegraph Labs experimental feature, we used an introductory video (hey, that’s me!) and encouraged our users to provide us feedback.

Customizing views

In addition to creating custom gadgets, we’ve enabled users to customize the look and feel of their dashboard.

Resizing gadgets

Using a 4-column grid system, users are able to resize their gadgets to their preference. You’re just a click & drag away from the perfect layout of your data.

Move it

Easily move your gadgets to your desired location. Don’t worry, the other gadgets will move out of the way for you.

Give it some color

Need a change of scenery? Want to color coordinate your sections? We’ve made it easy. Simply choose a color, and we will change your gadget to fit your style.
